Music has always followed Grace Ives. She was raised in New York City by music and film parents, and as a child starred in a shortlived band with now pop sensation Frankie Cosmos. But it wasn't until she graduated from MICA with a degree in graphic design, and after a brief stint at SUNY Purchase studying poetry, that she began to give music making a serious go. The songs on her new album, 'Janky Star' have a confessional quality, each one a blunt thought or feeling you may have but would never say out loud. Janky Star covers being sober, modern romance, writing a 6 page letter to your psychiatrist, and wondering if you're a narcissist. Ives describes it as 'cringe-worthy levels of honesty' where she 'mostly writes songs for people who hate themselves.' After writing and doing initial production on this collection of songs at home in Brooklyn, Ives teamed up with LA-based co-producer Justin Raisen, who would send over his contributions from the other side of the world. The result is 11 tracks that range from sophisticated pop songs to lo-fi punk to Americana-inflected jams. Ives' penchant for poetic musings on specific details and references has always been part of her encyclopedic brand of suburban nostalgia that borders on the absurd.
