VAULT MEMBER INTERVIEW: ROWAN

VAULT MEMBER INTERVIEW: ROWAN

When Angelina, the manager of our Nashville storefront and veteran Rolling Record Store adventurer, heard we were interviewing Rowan, she insisted on writing a little introduction to make sure you know just how cool this kid is:

"The first time I heard about Rowan, I was doing a phone interview with Eric Von Munz (awesome Minneapolis-based artist who has done some of our favorite posters, check out his stuff for sure) and he mentioned that a cool kid was going to be at our Rolling Record Store stop at Luna in Indianapolis, Indiana, and that he deserved something special.

Mainly I'm just impressed that some 9 year old from Indiana got an artist dude hundreds of miles away to pull strings for him on the radio, I loaded the RRS up with some special goodies just for Rowan. Once Josh and I met him and his lovely mom Stacie, we completely understood why Eric, and so many others in the TMR community are such huge fans.. Rowan has a pure, unadulterated love of vinyl, and the community that comes together through music. It's awesome to see, and I hope that we can keep making cool tunes for people like Rowan to enjoy for many years."

1. What's your name, where do you live, and what do you do for a living?

Rowan Moore. I live in Springboro, Ohio and I don't do anything for a living since I'm only 10. I have to go to school instead. It's pretty lame and boring. I'm my mom's assistant when she makes hats and sometimes I get to be the DJ at stores when they have parties. Really I just put on records, I don't talk or anything, but it's still really fun.

2. Do you remember when you first got into music?

I've always been into it, even when I was a baby. I would cry in my carseat if the radio wasn't on. I had a bunch of songs I loved when I was really little, like 2 and 3. Mostly it was Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and The White Stripes. I would play them on my mom's iPod when I was little but then when I got older I was allowed to use the turntable. I also really loved "Layla". I still love it, both versions.

Then I saw It Might Get Loud when my mom rented the DVD and I was obsessed with it. She had to get me my own copy of it. I watched it so many times. I just thought Jack and Jimmy were so cool. I like Edge too, but not as much. It has "Fly Farm Blues" in it. Oh man, I played that song millions of times. It's still my favorite Jack song.

Now that I'm older, I'm learning way more about the musicians I love. I have so many books about rock and blues, especially The Beatles, that I had to get my own bookcase just for my books. I get them at the bookstore in the antique mall by my house. I just want to learn everything!

3. What was your first vinyl record? How did you get it? Can you describe how you felt during your first dip into vinyl?

My mom has my her and my grandpa's records and I picked out vintage ones when I was little but the first ones of my own I got were the 45s of "Fly Farm Blues" and "Hotel Yorba" (the red one) and Merry Christmas From The White Stripes. I got them with my red turntable from my Elf on the Shelf before Christmas. Then I got more LPs and 45s for Christmas day. All I wanted that Christmas was records! Our Christmas cards were even The White Stripes themed. I thought I invented that idea until I joined TMRC and saw lots of people do TWS themed Christmas decorations.

I love vinyl so much because the covers are so awesome and I like to look at them while I play the record. Sometimes I can't believe I have such an awesome collection already. I'm only 10! I don't have very many variants or anything but I have so many records I love.

4. What inspired you to join the Vault?

I loved Jack so much and I wanted to get more stuff of his. I had to learn how to take good care of my records and then my mom let me join. It's mine with my name on it and that's pretty cool. I have a library card and a Vault membership.

5. What is your favorite Vault release, and why?

Jack White Live at Bonnaroo because it has so much awesome stuff in it and it was my very first Vault so it's always going to be extra-special to me.

6. What is your favorite Third Man memory?

Oh, man! I have so many! I got to go to TMR in 2014 and it was awesome! I didn't really know what to expect but it was such a good day! I got to make my record in the booth, wax-o-matic, and photos; everything worked that day. I found out later they break down a lot. I picked out lots of records and shirts and trinkets. Then I went to the Johnny Cash Museum after.

I got to see Jack in January last year and that was even better, I think. It was in Columbus and I was in the very front row! I had just gotten on TMRC so I got to meet some of my friends from there, too. I'm autistic and I get freaked out when I'm somewhere different, or around people I don't know but they were all so cool and no one from there minds if I don't talk very much because I'm overwhelmed. It's easier for me to talk online and type on my iPad than in real life. I couldn't talk at all till I was 6 so I really haven't been doing it that long.

I also got to go to the Rolling Record Store in Indianapolis on my Spring Break. My friend, Eric Von Munz, interviewed Angelina on his radio show and he told her how I really wanted one of the coolers they weren't selling anymore and she brought one there just for me! I was the only one who was allowed to buy it. That made me feel so special! I got to meet even more of the friends I met online there. Me and my mom got to hang out with my friend Nick and his mom and girlfriend and I got to see his awesome TMR collection. I couldn't even think because it was all so cool! Oh, and I gave Angelina a Polaroid photo of me -- I call them Rolaroids -- and now it travels around on the Rolling Record Store! How cool is that? My friends in other states have even taken pictures with it so it's like I'm there. Everybody I've ever met who works at TMR or collects TMR stuff is so cool and everyone is always so nice to me. I've made such awesome friends! I'm so lucky!

7. What are your interests outside of music?

Well, I used to skateboard a lot but I haven't been doing it as much lately because I started learning guitar. I'm not very good yet but I like my teacher a lot and he says I'll get better. I also like to go to antique stores with my mom. I look for cool hats and clothes. I collect vintage hats. I get books and records there, too. I love going to the movies, especially to see old ones when they play them on the big screen. I like to take pictures. I have my own camera. I used to do yoga all the time but now I've been lazy about it. I need to start again. I don't know, just normal stuff.

8. What is your favorite record you own, and why?

I can't pick just one! I love ALL my records!
