In exactly one week from today we will be jettisoning ourselves into the Texas sunshine and Day 2 of our epic SXSW Day Party Takeover.
Here's what's on the docket:
12 noon, the Pop Up Shop opens. Awesomeness ensues. Concurrently we'll be screening some wonderful short films in the venue until the live music starts...
1pm - The live music kicks off in the Museum of Human Achievement (MOHA, 'natch) with Memphis' Ex-Cult (new record is a total shredder). We originally advertised Ex-Cult as playing in the parking lot from the Rolling Record Store (RRS, 'natch) but we decided it may be too disruptive to MOHA's neighbors, so we've moved them inside to kickstart the day's events. Following Goner Records Lastest Hit-Makers will be Nashville's greatest shit makers, Ultras S/C. And then we got a double trouble treat.. from both Memphis AND Nashville, but now residing in the sunny sun of Oakland CA, Seth Sutton is one of favorite punks from the South East.. He's now splitting his time between his own DIY art punk outfit, Useless Eaters, and Oakland mod punk pop maniacs POW!. So we thought, what the heck, let's have them both play. And they will, back 2 back, super hero style.
Speaking of super heroes... Black Mekon. These mysterious "gents" have been close to my heart for as long as I can remember. Absolute heroes of the DIY scene in the lost province of Birmingham England, Black Mekon have scrabbled and scraped for years and are finally getting the hard earned notoriety they deserve. Witness them stateside for the first time ever at our killer show. Feelings from Detroit and on the bulletproof Urinal Cake label follow. Feelings features dudes who have been on the Detroit rock n roll scene for years, including but not limited to, our old friend Dave Buick, owner and sole operator of the one and only Italy Records.
Obnox is Lamont "BIM" Thomas. Formally from blues / punk legends The Bassholes and straight up punk rock legends This Moment In Black History. Obnox is his 'solo' project, and it pulls in strands from everything that is great about the last 50 years of music, all filtered through Bim's unique sour worldview and splattered all over a 4 track recording device. He's seriously one of the most interesting guys out there on the rock n roll scene. Don't miss out. Another killer Urinal Cake band follows 'Nox. Protomartyr are Detroit in 2014 personified and have recently moved on up to the Hardly Art label and getting the national press attention they deserve. These guys are one of THE bands to keep an eye out for this year. And last but totally in no way, least... Destruction Unit close out our first full day of bands. Their name says it all. Heavy psych rock damage of the highest order. Their live shows are insanely intense. Pretty much, this whole day is cream of the crop best-of what's happening in rock n roll today. We're very excited to present this to you all, and looking forward to seeing everyone's faces in Texas.
Lastly... don't forget that it will all be live streamed right HERE.
