SPECIAL FEATURE: Rheem Califone Continental Portable Turntable

SPECIAL FEATURE: Rheem Califone Continental Portable Turntable

We sat down with in-house photographer slash "Warehouse Dad", Jamie Goodsell, about his most recent treasure-hunting find: a Rheem Califone Continental Portable Turntable. (He even brought it into the office for a “show-and-tell!”) Here’s the inside scoop on Jamie’s new toy:

VAULT:
What type of turntable is this?

JAMIE:
Make/Model: Rheem Califone Continental 26-VP2

Year: Early '60s

VAULT:
How on earth did you find it?!

JAMIE:

I was looking for a solid portable turntable for my home office, and Karl - being the thoughtful dude that he is - found this on eBay for me. He said that he didn't wanna give me any bad advice, but the thing is...there's no such thing as bad advice when it comes to Karl.

VAULT:
TELL US MORE!

JAMIE:
The only thing I know about the turntable is that a guy in Iowa bought it at an estate sale from an antique dealer who had passed away. Although the turntable was working, there wasn't any sound coming out of the speaker, so I took it to the wonderful British Audio here in Nashville, and they fixed the issue for a very reasonable price.

It's a four speed direct drive turntable with a tube amplifier that has both ecc83 and ecc81 Vintage tubes running to a 15 inch driver. It has a 1/4 inch mic input jack as well as a 1/4 inch radio input jack which makes it great for hosting a square dance/ singing along karaoke style/hosting your own home radio show/ or plug in your guitar and play along. It also has a tape output to record your mixes/performances. It's really the coolest thing I own and it's all thanks to Karl for being an awesome human being.

VAULT:
So what record did you decide to play first?

JAMIE:

I rechristened it with Hits of Les Paul and Mary Ford. This record is one of my favorites to play, it's got such a nice tone to it - it sounded incredible on the Califone.

Pretty cool, huh? Thanks for sharing, Jamie!
