The White Stripes

Elephant UHQR

scum stats: limited to 10,000 copies

I am not an audiophile. I am fairly certain that my ears are fried enough that I could never BE an audiophile.

Nevertheless, I helped guide the White Stripes into this realm with the 20th anniversary UHQR 2xLP 45rpm cut of Elephant. By all accounts I've read, every audiophile who's laid ears on this record is beyond impressed with the sound here. I am unsure if I've ever been party to such a universally acclaimed release ever.

There's nothing more really for me to say about that album that I didn't already say in the liner notes on this version. I'm EXTREMELY proud of the notes and maybe one day I'll share it on the blog so that everyone can read. But for now, they're behind the boxset paywall. That being said, the $150 price tag on this puppy is absolutely prohibitive.

(I don't even have a copy of the reel-to-reel tape version of this yet and don't even have a way to play it...but I'm still wanting/needing it.)

So I'm giving away a copy here. Post in the comments why YOU should have this audiophile record. Maybe it's a listing of your stereo rig. Maybe your rig is shit but you just KNOW that you'll appreciate the lush packaging here. Maybe it's a sob story. Maybe it's just a nonsense whatever limerick. Winner decided solely by me, you need to get the comment in before midnight central time November 2nd. Hop to it.

I’d love to receive this Ben because
it’s pretty good looking (for an Elephant)

Don’t want to hear about it
Every single one of you’’s got a story to tell (why you want this record)
The feel in’ in my bones says, with me, this record will find a home.

It’s quite possible that you work at Third Man, Ben
But it’s a fact that this would be my 7th copy of Elephant
And right now, you could care less about me
But soon enough, you’ll need my mailing address by the time midnight comes.

I cannot play guitar. My son taught me how to play a chord from seven nation army in your London Blue Room last weekend. I was so happy. This would cap a great week.
Maybe I’ll teach myself, that’ll be nice.

We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy! I have an average spec hi-fi so probably wouldn’t do it justice, but may the most worthy win and enjoy it! Fond memories of the first time i saw then back in Aug 2001 at the Roadhouse in Manchester (UK).

keep on rockin’

Because the first time I heard the record was on a CD through a miserable-sounding car stereo as my mum drove us through California on a 3 week road trip in 2003. I figure that hearing it on UHQR twenty years later would be an appropriately polar opposite bookend to that original experience. Cmaaaaan. Beam it into my ears.

Hello.
I’m sure there are people more qualified (and better equipped sound-wise) than me to get this. Plus, I live over in the old world – Germany to be exact. But I remember the day when a friend gave me a burned CD with lots of rock tracks from the 70s and “Seven Nation Army” was on there. So for a while there I thought the White Stripes were from circa the same era as Deep Purple and the ilk. Much to my surprise this was a recent band back in 2004. So I bought all their albums, joined a fan forum (anyone still remember the Little Room – I even won second place in a poetry contest/give-away of White Stripes merch there).
Now I’m here, 39 years old and the father of a little boy of 3 months – still rocking out to the stripes. Do I deserve to get this thing? Probably not. Will someone worthy get it from Ben? You betcha! So all is good. Sending much love to all of you out there! Be like the squirrel…
Best,
Jan

An Elephant era true story:-

I once went to Bridlington Spa
Tequila I drank at the bar
I saw The White Stripes
On the coldest of nights
The best gig I’ve been to by far

Hello !

I don’t know If I deserve to have it, but I can tell you how much this record changed my life as a kid. We never listened to rock or pop at home. My parents were classical musicians, so I grew up with opera and classical music in my ears, and as much as I liked Wagner, Debussy and Verdi, and still do, everything changed for me by a hot summer day, in june 2003.

It was a birthday party and a friend of mine had brought two CDs. One of them was Elephant. When I heard the first notes of Seven Nation Army, I was blown away. I remember playing Black Math over and over and over again. I am French and didn’t speak english, so of course I couldn’t understand any of the lyrics. But it just, I don’t know, spoke to me. Everything did. The riff, the voice, the beat. Everything.
I don’t remember much of the party. Only that I stood in front of the stereo for hours playing the CD again and again, as if a whole revolution was going on in my head.

I never got the chance to see The White Stripes live. I go and see Jack White play whenever I can, and everytime in front of the stage I am that kid again, standing in front of the stereo in my friend’s basement.

I may own a lot of records now, of various style and taste. But the very start of it all is Elephant. The White Stripes allowed me to discover many things, many bands and genres, everything that I love and listen now comes from the day I discovered Elephant, and I will never thank them enough for that. So among all of my records, I still have a ripped CD of Elephant, with “The White Stips – Elefant” written on it, in my childish handwriting. That CD remains one of my most valuable souvenirs !
That’s all I can say. Sorry if it was a bit long and not very clear, my english is not perfect !

I would be playing this on my Logic DM101 from one Elephant to Another so to speak.

I’ve watched 15 different YouTube videos of the unboxing of this record. I am now confident that if I get this I completely know how to remove it from the box and play it. Send it to me Ben it’s going to be in VERY safe hands. Thank you.
