"I Never Knew"
scum stats: reissue limited to 750 copies on green vinyl
The a-side is charmingly amateur UK indie pop from four decades ago that sounds exactly like the words above would make you think. I promise.
But the real treat here is the flip "Television Brought Me Up" with its twinges of island rhythm syncopation and downbeat strumming, slyly accented with tasteful flugelhorn accompaniment and lyrics that are just insightful and relatable. For example, the stanza below bowled me over with its simplistic honesty...
Now I'm finally sitting in my flat alone
A twelve foot room for a twelve inch home
And whoever comes knocking now'll be out of luck
The neighbors knocking, banging, shouting...turn it up
Seemingly the band only ever did this single and that, to me, is one-off perfection.
