BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK
Sven Wunder
Sun-Kissed b/w Variations In Rock
scum stats: whatever they should've pressed, like 15% less than that quantity
The syncopated horn measures on "Sun Kissed" are the true attraction here, all sorts of mid-70's, Midwest show band righteousness, empowering and empowered all at the same time. Toss in funky breakbeats coupled with stretched out swaths of sitar and it cannot go wrong.
"Variations In Rock" feels RIPE for hip hop sampling, the JBs-styled drums and honky brass squawks exist here in the prime framing of a building block for something greater. I realize this can equally be interpreted as a compliment or as a slight and I mean it in both ways.
My overall take on Sven has been a damn roller coaster, I dig the first album SO much but have definitely felt like recent material has had more diminishing returns. This single is more in line with my earlier appreciation...yes that's a good thing. High hopes they continue on this path of illumination.
