BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK
Joshua Burkett
If You Can't Wander In The Waffle, Wonder In Drizzle LP
scum stats: limited to 300 hand-numbered, letter-pressed, hand-painted copies that are supposedly mostly warped. a later reissue claims to correct this.
The straightforward Corwood Industries styled recording here coupled with the austere presentation of just simple voice and acoustic guitar feels...intrusive. Like something you're not even supposed to be listening to. As if you'd walked right into someone's confessional to interrupt for your own voyeuristic pleasure.
All that to say, it is oddly comforting at the same time. The hushed demeanor demands a close listen and the tendency for vocals to trail away off mic, for a hum to loudly whisper in the foreground or a song fading out just when it seems like it was about to go somewhere...it all lends itself to the idea that the same group of songs, recorded by the same musician in the same room with the same exact instruments would've sounded ENTIRELY different were it recorded just one hour later.
Coupled with the fact that none of this material appears to be available in an immediately accessible digital format (based upon my lazy Googling) and this one gets a strong solid recommendation from down here in Nashville. Seek it out.
