"Great Paper Towns of America" 3 x flexi postcard set
scum stats: limited to 201 numbered sets
Adam's work in Adult. has been one of the most consistently compelling bands for me over the past twenty years. Their records always get gripped. So for what appears to be a first time release solely under his own name, I was happy to pay the $50 price to grab this set.
The fact that he put a "♡ U" on the mailing label just warms my heart. I've been in Nashville for nearly 13 years, I have no delusions that anyone even remembers me. So little reminders otherwise spark a smile on my face every time.
When flexis came back on the scene about a decade ago, the whole realm felt ripe with promise. THIS is what I was hoping more people would do with the form...experimental art projects. The audio is inherently more lo-fidelity, but with a cheaper price of reproduction, a lower weight, and literally, more flexibility.
The audio on each of these cards steers a line between field recording, sound collage and darkly constructed soundscapes. It might not be anything that'll ear worm you, but that's clearly not the point. The audio properties contained here, combined with the sharp letterpressed envelope and empire in decline photographs, carefully wrapped in a delicate rice paper sleeve, all illustrate a cohesive tableau that presents a strong, actualized artistic vision.
Something to slam on repeat? No. But impressive, creative exploration? Absolutely.
