BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Pedro Yes and the Nos

scum stats: nobody tells me nothing

This single was tossed in as a freebie with an actual paying order I had for the Danny Kroha record (his least known?) via the Brazilian imprint Mandinga. Arrived in the mail today, within the past hour or so. Always game for a quick, to the point review. Here goes...

Side A opener "Human Combustion" is just the right kinda slow burn garage vibe that is hard to come by. Everyone always wants to be snarling attitude and high energy and dialing it back to just a knowing slither is way more where it's at.

Side note: Meg White once bought me a book about spontaneous human combustion for Christmas. It is, to this day, one of my favorite things I have ever received. I felt...seen.

"Smoked City" feels a tad paint-by-numbers, too familiar to break out from any notable spin or uniqueness. Pass.

"Dumpster Driver" didn't initially strike me as anything remarkable, but the lyric of "Dumpster driver stole my trash can", at this point in my life, hits hard in regards to how absolutely fucking pissed I would be if any semblance of normalcy in my city services were to disappear. In short, the song made me FEEL real feelings and the cast iron heart buried in my chest cavity is a tough puppy to get through to.

"Wasted And Bored" again with JUST the right tempo, somewhere between a plod and a dirge and intuitively, head-noddingly smooth, with the late in the song appearance of double tracked saxophone, squealing, surehandedly guiding things to a respectful conclusion.

Hard to justify international shipping on just about anything these days, but would totally be worth tossing this in an order if you could find two or three other singles from Mandinga to amortize the costs. Enjoy.
