BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK
Greg Cartwright
Tin Ten
scum stats: 135 copies on white vinyl, the rest on black
Saw the Reigning Sound about a month ago and was surprised to see this single at the merch table. Surprised because as much as I love, appreciate and follow Greg's work, I had no prior knowledge to this record. Additionally, the fact that it came out on Dusty Medical (a label run by dear friend Kevin Meyer, whom I helped with logistics on their first couple of releases ages ago) was all the more confounding.
Anyway, the a-side, "Come A Little Closer" is just a classic Greg groove. I find it very rare that a solo, electric guitar recording with vocal accompaniment is completely satisfying...you usually wish there was a full band, or think that maybe it should've been done acoustic...but this here nails it. Simple, catchy, a little minor-key darkness thrown in for coloring, lyrics that connect...wise beyond measure.
(And yes, I know there's a full-on version on the Oblivians "Desperation" LP, but man, this solo version smokes it)
B-side of "Love Won't Leave You With a Song" was featured on the Reigning Sound "Love and Curses" LP and here it's just winsomely charmed. Solo electric (again) Greg's voice is emotionally evocative. The timbre he puts out, the way Greg can just destroy you with a single word...we should all be so lucky to feel such a connection to a voice.
And yes, these recordings are live, but I don't think that even matters or even vaguely registers here. What you do need to know is that there's maybe five people alive who I feel have been as consistent as Greg as been with his prodigious output. Almost 30 years in and he's still churning out straight gems. Don't sleep on anything he's done. For real.
