BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK...AND GIVEAWAY!

Asheton Asheton Kvaran Whipple

"Forward Motion" b/w "This Dance"

scum stats: limited to 250 copies on white vinyl

As a brother with a sister and a brother, as a fan of sibling bands, as a fan of the Asheton family, a supporter of limited edition colored vinyl...this single drops all kinds of nuggets that feel just straight-up tailored for my supreme appreciation and enjoyment.

Featuring local Michigan roustabout Ragnar Kvaran on guitar, Stooge Scott Asheton on drums, his sister Kathy (who's previous recorded musical efforts seem mostly limited to an impossible to find Kvaran cassette) on bass and vocals, and Tony Whipple (a resume mostly of studio engineering) on drums...this motley assortment delivers a strong, palpable pair of tunes, all muscle, no extraneous bullshit, just...smart.

Both songs are propelled by Kathy's head-turning vocals, narratively all-knowing, all lithe and graceful and sonorant, something shockingly absent from approximately 95% of singing that seems to cross my desk. Why have we not heard from her before?!?!?!

As a limited local Detroit-area release for tomorrow's Record Store Day drop (check out TMR, UHF, Dearborn Music and Ripe Records), this one will certainly be a difficult disc to find. But that's where I come in to share the wealth. I've got a couple extra copies sitting here for a giveaway.

In the comments section below, post something about siblings...working with them, working against them, the beauty of the inextricable bond one shares with them. I'll pick the best couple comments and shoot them a copy of this single in an effort to share the love. Everyone else...call up your Detroit connects and track one of these suckers down.
