The Bright Lights

“Motor City Funk Parts 1 & 2”

scum stats: they probably pressed a lot of these

“Funk Night” is a designation in Detroit that can equally apply to a style of music, a type of party, or specific proper noun record label and DJ night.

My intro to “funk night” probably came directly from a xeroxed flyer with a scan of this Bright Lights record label on it.

For almost two decades now, every time that distinctive Silver Fox label appeared in a stack of records, I hoped it would be this song. Yet not once did it every appear in the wild.

But fuck it, I’m an adult now and can spend $15 for this single and still enjoy it infinitely. And someday, I will be asked to DJ a “funk night” and this will undoubtedly carry it’s weight then.
