BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Sylvan Esso

"Radio" b/w "Kick Jump Twist"

Have you ever tried typing while holding a baby? This shit is hard and voice recognition software is still kinda scary.

I think SE is the first band I've bought four 12" singles from since Nirvana.

I mean...do folks consider this a band? Voice and electronics...would they prefer to be called a group?

Either way, I'm guiltlessly endeared to all of Sylvan Esso's junk. Violet has watched a video of them doing "Hey Mami" on a rooftop in NYC about a thousand times and the soft, lilting vocals paired with simple, effective drum programming makes me happy.

These two songs are stopgap before a new album and...damn, babies do NOT like being set down for their dad's to write mediocre record reviews.

All their 12"s provide the a cappella and instrumental of the songs and they have always compelled me. This single is no different.

I feel the second verse of "Radio" is intriguing...here's an excerpt, go and check it out yourselves as this baby will not stop crying.

“Now don't you look good sucking american d**k
You're so surprised they like you
You're so cute and so quick
Singin' I've got the moves of a TV queen
Folk girl hero in a magazine
Faking the truth in a new pop song

Don't you wanna sing along”
