BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Co-Real Artists

(this is the only name I've ever known on this record, but I see Gordon Jackson, Anthony Green and Denise Jackson have specific named credit on the label, so I add that here)

"What About You (In the World Today)"

WOOOOO boy, did not EVER think that I would see an original of this let alone OWN it, but you know what, maybe 2020 ain't all that bad after all.

I've been hot on this song for almost twenty years, I first heard it in 2001 with its inclusion on the absolutely magnificent "Funky 16 Corners" compilation. Put it in my Discogs wantlist about a year ago. Saw a copy there for a WILD asking price and "Make Offer" option. Discerning the seller was from Michigan, I was able to get this for a song, trading copies of old weird Michigan records I'd stashed spares of, my total cash outlay being a mere fraction of what this disc commands on the open market.

This proto-hip hop, positive Black power anthem is PERFECT in every way. Unimprovable. I've said it before, but I'll repeat it forever...the stark beauty of just vocals and percussion is godhead. And "What About You" is one of the most stellar examples I can offer. Take this into the weekend and rest of the year and use it as I do...to get INSPIRED and MOTIVATED to GET SHIT DONE.
