The Space Lady
The Space Lady's Greatest Hits
scum stats: bunch of variations, none of them interest me
Was quickly scanning the shelves at home, trying to find a record that encapsulated the Fourth of July, America and all that complicated, messiness tied into both of those things.
It wasn't Tad or Spiritualized or the Swamp Rats or Tyler the Creator (I was sitting on the floor, so the T's and S's were at eye-level) but damn, I think it's the Space Lady.
An outsider artist, doing their own thing with wildly unique covers of pop hits, classics, well-known songs, seemingly with no regard to commercial success, let alone acceptance, busking in the street but virtually ignored otherwise, only to find she'd attained cult status years later...that feels like a truly American story, rife with independence, so this is what I choose to listen to this weekend.
