BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Stephen Malkmus

“Traditional Techniques”

scum stats: 500 numbered copies on red vinyl with alternate risograph printed cover (mine is lucky #399, my grade school cub scout pack number). Of course there’s black vinyl too.

I’ll be the first to level “godhead” status to a considerable number of Malkmus’ post-Pavement projects, whether with or sans Jicks.

In short, self-titled, “Face the Truth” and my overall fave “Pig Lib.”

But in the past ten years or so, I’ve merely enjoyed individual tracks here and there. I think it’s probably that I haven’t the time to invest emotionally in later releases. Family and full time job, although surrounding myself with music, can sometimes limit my wider enjoyment of it.

With clouds parting, “Traditional Techniques” is yet another entry into the “godhead” category and I’m ebullient about it.

Depending on your definition of the term, the self-categorization of the album as “folk rock” can seem apt or just downright confusing. From my perch, it is largely predicated on the acoustic guitar being the forefront instrument of the release. Interpret that as you may.

Chill vibe aura, coasting without complacency, movement without acceleration, acoustics without timidity, every step of the way this album wisely avoids every possible pitfall. Tasteful electric guitar highlighting, percussion and drums taking the backseat while still contributing to the overall tableau. Choice.

I look forward to being able to spend even more time with this one. As immediate as it already feels, I expect the appreciation to only grow. Dig in.
