BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

James Wavey

“Roses”

scum stats: limited to 100 hand-numbered copies (I’ve nabbed #55, for those keeping score at home)

I’m not REALLY on Instagram…I had to create an account a few years back to combat a page that, upon quick glance, seemed to be mine.

Nevermind the fact that it ONLY posted pictures of me and despite my inclination on these weekly posts, I am not THAT vain a person. Instagram’s answer to said imposter was that I had to make an “official” page. So I did. Begrudgingly.

Anyway, after years of only following my wife, I realized I was missing out on some cool records/info being shared there and took the plunge and followed record-related folks whom I trust.

Can’t remember where exactly “Roses” crossed my path, maybe the Cool Chris from Groove Merchant in San Fran was selling some other records by Wavey and I worked backwards from there. Regardless…the path led me here to “Roses."

The samples here are solid…Swank came over from his office to comment on the Pete Drake part on album opener “Flower Dance” while I was surely enraptured by the insanely apt Wimple Winch “Save My Soul” lick propelling “Cool Breeze.”

Once I saw “Limited to 100 copies” I was impressed. It is NOT a sound decision to only make 100 copies of a record. Maybe they’re sitting on another 400 in a basement waiting for it to “hit” but whatever, this album floats.

Hazy, psychedelic hip-hop that seems like it could be on the fringier ends of the Soulquarirans realm. Seems like there’s a welcome spot for this album in ANY self-respecting vinyl collection. Grab it.
