O Yes My Lord b/w God Said He Would

Can’t remember when I first heard this one, but as a local Detroit, small label, Archer pressed 7-inch single it’s just about as close to “my shit” as you can get.

The “O Yes My Lord" has been sampled multiple times. Once by Common on “Kingdom” and upon digesting that, I was outright shocked that only the group vocals were interpolated.

Shocked because the drum accompaniment on “Lord” is straight-up BONKERS. Add to that the fact that there is NO OTHER instrumentation and I’m crazy hooked, charge me whatever, I just need to have it.

The comforting thought though is that Phantogram’s sample in “Same Old Blues” does utilize some of the drums, but just barely and only for the first 11 seconds or so. Seems like these folks just REALLY like the group vocals.

Whatever, someone show me how to sample and I’ll blow your mind with these drum parts. For real.

The b-side “God Said He Would” sounds like a title that some petulant 5-year-old would scream at her parents. The song has an upbeat verve to it. Good enough I suppose. But whomever is playing drums on “O Yes My Lord” has a lifetime free admission to the Ben Blackwell drummer’s hall of fame. Essential. Grab it now.
