BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Loose Koozies

Slow Down Time b/w Marita

scums stats: they didn’t tell me any

There will always be a sweet spot in my heart for bands from Detroit that self-release their own single. As if being from Detroit isn’t tough enough, having to do all the record label shit on your own is no picnic. Respect.

So, in and of itself, the Loose Koozies single is already aces in my book. The fact that frontman E.M. Allen does time in the Craig Brown Band certainly doesn’t hurt.

A-side starts off hazily reminiscent of the Eagles “Take It Easy” and I’m unsure if the band would view that as a compliment or a diss.

I don’t like the Eagles, but I like this song. It trucks. Has a melody. Is reminiscent without stepping into pastiche. A tough balance.

And I like E.M. (I know him as Eric) because I appreciate his trajectory. He once interviewed me at my mom’s house while he was writing for Real Detroit Weekly. He now sports an impressive beard and I commend that.

The flip-side is a little slow for my tastes, but I can understand where it’s coming from. Ain’t my cup of tea but I see some folks digging it. Bonus: with a publishing company named “Sneakers Has Hamms” you just KNOW that was said in earnest at one point and was TOO good not to utilize in a completely different context.

(Sneakers is a bar in Ferndale, Michigan, FYI)

Do your duty and support working artists by buying this single. There’s literally no downside.
