Big Business
Tour EP 4
scum stats: I mean, it smells limited, does that mean anything?
So over-looked and under appreciated, Big Business is, simply, the shit. Coady and Jared hold the tenuous balance of heavy, solid rock and roll thrash while also not being afraid to drop in a sick melody. Hooks, as I define them, for days.
I like the premise of this single, two covers of the band Suicide and two originals. Picture disc made to look like a CD…this was what I pitched to the people in Kanye’s “team” for a vinyl release of “Yeezus” on Third Man when they eventually told me they didn’t have the rights to put out the LP. Still wondering what in the hell that is all about.
Anyway, the originals exist well in the traditional Big Business oeuvre. Nothing at all divergent. But enjoyable without a doubt. A welcome addition to their catalog and my collection.
The Suicide covers are a revelation though. “Cheree”, the original of which exists in some weird nexus of electro punk doo wop, hangs in a airy, sparse realm of percussive accoutrements propulsion. And the church organ…can’t ever go wrong with that. Along with Jered’s most, dare I say “traditional” vocal flex I’ve ever heard and, well, smiles abound.
“Ghost Rider” though, a hit if Suicide ever had one, starts off unremarkably…it’s hard to make a live drummer improve upon the stentorian strength of the drum machine on the OG, but once they REALLY kick in at the 1:25 mark, you feel in in your solar plexus.
Weird this thing has no sellers on Discogs, I picked mine up at their merch table a little over a month ago. Get to it.
